National Truth and Reconciliation Day

National Truth and Reconciliation Day

Today marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We honour the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities. The generational impacts of residential schools, along with years of forced assimilation and abuse, are vital aspects of Canadian history that we must reflect on and learn from as part of the ongoing reconciliation process.

In recognizing the importance of education and collective action, we encourage you to explore the following resources to learn more about residential schools and to participate in community events:

Project Updates

TV Remote for Individuals with Dementia

The software team has been focusing on aspects of the remote that make it universal. They added code that made the remote functional with any TV box and successfully tested it with NEC remotes, Samsung smart TVs, Sony TVs, regular TV boxes, and the Roku TV.

Additionally, the team updated the user interface of the connected website for the remote to make it more user-friendly and improve the user experience.

Finally, testing was done on competitor remotes to make comparisons. The next step the team is taking with this project is preparing to take part in the Schulich Engineering competition!

BIOMOD

The BIOMOD team has concluded their in-lab experimental work this past month. This consisted of conducting multiple-dye experiments, stability assays, and inserting the constructed nanopore samples..

The next steps the team is focusing on includes analyzing final results, website construction, working on the video presentation for the competition, and planning to present at the Undergraduate Research Symposium in November.

Lastly, the BIOMOD team is recruiting new members to continue their project for BIOMOD 2025! If you’re interested in joining the team, keep reading to see the official announcement and information on how to apply!
