Hand Pedal Adapted Sport System for Spinal Cord Patients
Removing the barrier for acute spinal cord and neurology patients of low transfers
Neurorehabilitation at the Foothills hospital received a donated recumbent handcycle bicycle from Ultimate Parasports Calgary Ultimate Para Sports | Ultimate Para Sports Association | Calgary, which includes access and set up for Zwift, an indoor cycling app.
While the traditional handcycle is beneficial, we observed a gap for acute spinal cord and neurology patients who may not be ready for low transfers. To address this, we're exploring the development of a wall-mounted hand pedal system, designed by engineering students, to be used in conjunction with Zwift. This innovation enables patients to engage in hand pedaling from their chair or wheelchair, eliminating barriers. Partnering with Glenrose Rehabilitation Research, Innovation & Technology (GRRIT) and W21C, along with Parasport, we aim to create equipment that is small, light, and possibly portable, bridging hospital and community activities. Join us in expanding accessible sports opportunities for everyone.
