Universal Television Remote for those with Dementia

Enhancing User Experience for Dementia Patients: A Minimalistic Remote and Customizable Website Solution.

This project aims to develop a minimalistic remote control and customizable website designed to improve the user experience for dementia patients.

The remote aims to minimize confusion and frustration, while the website allows caretakers to limit access to unfamiliar channels and content. The project requirements were based on input from Dr. Cindy Graham and validated through interviews with nursing home volunteers.

This initiative shows promise in addressing common challenges faced by dementia patients.

Problem

For the 55 million Dementia patients around the world, TV is more than just entertainment

Watching television helps keep the brain active, stimulating positive memories, improve the mood, and increase socialization.
The team has recognized two main problems with the standard TV remote for those with dementia:

1
Complex
Current TV remotes in the market look to be complex with numerous buttons, making it challenging for patients to toggle the volume and change channels
2
Poor design and low quality
The current dementia technology solutions in the market sufffer from poor design and low quality

Solution

Our mission is to develop a high-quality, user-friendly TV remote that addresses these critical issues faced by seniors with dementia, enhancing their quality of life and connection to the world.

We seeked to design a remote that's simple and familiar, works with any TV setup, easily customizable, and ergonomic and long-lasting.

With a simple design, not only did we succeed in designing something simple for patients but the remote is easily customizable by the caretaker who has the ability to customize channel and volume ranges easily through a website.
